Career Change Resume: How to Show Transferable Skills

Updated October 2026 · Best Resume Studio

When you change careers, your resume has to answer one question quickly: why are you a good fit for this new job?

Start with a targeted summary

Name the role you want, then connect your background to it. Example: "Operations supervisor transitioning to project management, with 7 years of leading cross-functional teams and a PMP certification."

Highlight transferable skills

Look at the job description and find overlaps: managing budgets, training people, analyzing data, working with customers. Put those skills in your summary and skills section.

Reframe your experience

Keep your real job titles and employers, but choose bullets that matter for the new role. A teacher moving into training can stress curriculum design, presentations and measuring learning outcomes.

Show new learning

Courses, certificates, bootcamps, freelance work or volunteer projects in the new field show commitment. Give them their own section near the top.

Use a combination format

A summary and skills section first, then reverse-chronological experience, usually works best. Read more in resume formats explained.
