How to Write a Resume in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide
Updated October 2026 · Best Resume Studio
A resume has one job: to get you an interview. Recruiters often skim a resume in under a minute, and many employers run it through an applicant tracking system (ATS) first. That means your resume must be easy for both software and people to read. Here is a simple process that works for most US jobs.
1. Pick a clear, standard layout
Use US Letter size, readable fonts (10–12 pt for body text), and standard section headings such as Summary, Experience, Education and Skills. A one-column layout is the safest choice for ATS. Two-column designs can work for creative roles, but keep the reading order logical.
2. Start with your contact details
Include your name, phone, professional email, city and state, and a LinkedIn or portfolio link. You don't need a full street address, a photo, your date of birth or marital status on a US resume.
3. Write a short summary
Two to four sentences: who you are, your years of experience, your strongest skills and one result you're proud of. Tailor it to the job you want. See our resume summary examples.
4. List experience in reverse-chronological order
For each job, show the title, employer, location and dates (month and year). Under each role, write 3–6 bullet points. Start every bullet with an action verb and add a number when you can: "Reduced processing time by 30% by automating weekly reports." Avoid phrases like "responsible for" — describe what you achieved instead.
5. Add education and certifications
List degree, school and graduation year (optional if it was long ago). Add relevant certifications and licenses with the issuing organization.
6. Choose skills that match the job
Read the job description and include the hard skills you actually have: tools, software, methods and certifications. Keep soft skills for your bullet points, where you can prove them. Our guide to resume skills has examples.
7. Tailor, then proofread
Adjust your summary, skills and top bullets for each application. Then check spelling, dates and formatting. Read it aloud once — it catches more mistakes than you think.
Final checklist
- One or two pages, US Letter, PDF with real text
- Contact details complete and professional
- Every role has dates and 3–6 results-focused bullets
- Skills match the job description
- No photo, no personal details that aren't job-related
