European CV format: Europass, Germany, France and beyond
Continental Europe has no single CV standard, but a few conventions are shared: A4 paper, clear language levels and, in several countries, a photo.
What European employers expect
- One to two A4 pages. Academic and senior roles can run longer.
- A photo is common in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and parts of Southern and Eastern Europe, but it is never required. Leave it out for multinationals and in the Netherlands, Ireland and the Nordics unless asked.
- Language skills shown with CEFR levels (A1 to C2), for example "German C1, French B2".
- A Europass-style CV is often requested for EU institutions, public bodies and some scholarships.
Country notes
- Germany (Lebenslauf): a tabular, reverse-chronological layout; date of birth and a photo are still common but optional. Some applicants add place, date and signature at the end.
- France: one page is preferred for junior roles; a short "profil" at the top is usual.
- Spain, Italy and Portugal: a photo and a personal-details block are common; data-protection consent lines are sometimes added at the foot.
Common mistakes
- Using US Letter paper. European printers and portals expect A4.
- Writing "fluent" without a level. CEFR levels are understood everywhere in Europe.
- Sending a designed CV to a public body that asked for a Europass format.
